With approximately 4 billion “unbanked” people in the world, of which approximately 3 billion own a mobile phone, the mobile money transfer (MMT) market represents a huge opportunity for both mobile operators and financial institutions to generate additional revenues and target new clients.
The new Wages Protection System in the UAE, which will have a staged implementation between 30th November 2009 and 31st May 2010, mandates that all private companies will have to pay workers’ wages via a bank or another approved financial institution. With approximately 2 million immigrant workers in the UAE without bank accounts, the potential opportunities are enormous for mobile operators.
